Stock car racing career

Whilst most of his friends were out fishing or playing football in the park, 13 year old Steve Anscombe had other ideas! His passion for Stock Car Racing had already taken hold, and he swapped his football boots for racing boots!

Barely in his teens, ‘Cecil’ (as he would later become known as) started his Banger Racing career on the small dirt track ovals of Sussex, with his very first outing at the now defunct Wannock track in East Sussex. Over the next few years he would race at most of the dirt tracks throughout Sussex, including; Horam, Chalvington, Worthing and Smallfield.

In 1991, Steve took the plunge and licensed with Spedeworth Motorsports, Europe’s largest motorsport promoters, in an attempt to improve his abilities and boost his career. With his brightly coloured cars, down-to-earth attitude and unique nickname, Cecil soon became a favourite with the fans on the terraces, where he still remains firm favourite today.

Aside from being a crowd pleaser, Cecil has had much success in the National Bangers during his time at Spedeworth with an estimated 300+ trophies proudly displayed at home, in the office and anywhere people will let him display them! Countless race wins and podium finishes are highlighted with 1996 English Championship win at Ipswich Stadium, 2nd in the 1997 Spedeworth Banger World Final at Wimbledon Stadium and winning the 1998 Southern Championship at his home track of Arlington, East Sussex.

Cecil has also seen glory in various team events for such teams as the Arlington Angels, Seasiders and Team Blitz, where he was part of the winning National Teams at Hednesford in 1998.

Although remaining faithful to his home promotion, and racing on all of the Spedeworth tracks (Arlington, Aldershot, Bovingdon, Rye House, Ipswich, Wimbledon and Great Yarmouth), Steve has found time to visit many other tracks, including; Mildenhall, Warton, Mendips, Hednesford, Birmingham, Northampton, Swaffham, Taunton, Ringwood, Standlake as well as Cowdenbeath in Scotland, Warneton and Ruisebroek in Belgium and even two tours of South Africa!

After returning from an illness in 2001, Cecil picked up right where he left off. In fact, taking a race win at his very first meeting back at his home track of Arlington!

Since returning Cecil has tried his hand at various other formulas, including the Spedeworth 1300 Stock Cars and more recently (2006 – present) Spedeworth’s very own 2litre Stock Cars where he has already had 5 very successful years capturing the English Championship twice, the East Anglian Championship 3 times and also winning the Southern Championship.

Cecil has also had some success in the Rookie Bangers, or Domestic Bangers as they are now known, and has held all the top domestic titles and is currently the Arlington Track Champion. His team, The Dreamers, are the reigning team champions, and have been for the last 4 years!

Throughout his illustrious career, Cecil has been featured in almost every Banger Racing publication, including; Blitz, Wasted, Bangers – The Crash Magazine, 3Litre, Unlimited and T-Bone.

Steve continues to achieve success today and recently won the prestigious Arena Essex Firecracker title on November 6th 2011.

A claim to fame is that it was actually Steve driving the ‘Cat’ in Vroom Vroom’s Cat and Mouse segments. The show aired on Sky One from 2006-2007 and was hosted by Jon Desborough, Brendan Coogan, Lisa Rogers and Emma Parker Bowles. Cat and Mouse featured a small hatchback car, covered in Mouse attire, driven by a celebrity, being chased by our man Steve in a 4.2l Jaguar – the Cat!
